We are excited to bring a Jane Austen Regency Festival to Cedar City for the 3rd year and share our love of costuming while meeting new people. The festival will include two days of activities, including a picnic and lawn games, guest speaker, promenade, Regency market, movie night, garden tea and ball as well as some fun additions this year. It is fantastic to be able to share our love of all things Regency with others and the community and provide a space for everyone to showcase their outfits and enjoy the events and beautiful locations around Cedar City.
This is a costumed event so please wear Regency attire to each activity (other than the movie night and possibly ball workshop). We have ideas, tutorials and inspiration to help you come up with your own Regency clothes on our Instagram and Facebook pages if you are new to Regency costuming. You can always reach out to us for more help. Costumes can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like. We have found that the accessories really make the outfit. Two meals will be provided during the festival, including a light dinner at the ball and afternoon tea on the last day. We will have a ball workshop so you can learn the dances before the actual ball. Please refer to our Schedule page to see a full list of events by day and our FAQ page for questions. Follow us on one of our social media pages to be kept up to date. And check out our Pinterest board for inspiration. Please be courteous of your fellow festival-goers and make sure to be prompt to all events as they will start on time. We realize taking photos is half the fun, so please plan for time before or after events to get your photographs. We will also have professional photographers at the events who will be documenting the activities. If you are interested in selling Regency/Jane Austen items at our market, please email us directly. If you are new to festivals, come ready to meet new friends and don’t be shy! It is unreal to be among so many people in costume–it is one of my very favorite things. It’s a step back in time and a chance to be creative.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Where do I find Regency clothes?
Amazon, Etsy, thrift stores, DIY tutorials online
Are kids allowed?
Children under 12 are allowed at the picnic and promenade at no cost with a ticket-holding parent. Teens are welcome at the ball, but must have their own ticket.
What if I have dietary restrictions?
Please let us know if you have dietary restrictions when purchasing a ticket and we will do our best to provide appropriate options for you.
Do I need prior Regency dance experience?
Not at all! The festival includes a dance workshop so you can practice the dances ahead of time and feel a little more comfortable during the ball. The dance instructor will call out each step and everyone helps each other. It is so much fun! Please note you that you do not have to dress in Regency clothes for the workshop, but you are more than welcome to.
What is a promenade?
“Promenades were a popular social activity during the Regency era (1811–1820), when people would walk in public spaces to see and be seen. Promenades were a way to display fashion, exercise, and enjoy the outdoors.” -Google
We will promenade through SUU campus and parts of downtown Cedar City as a celebration of Jane Austen’s life and works and to showcase all of our hard work creating Regency outfits. Wear your best day outfit (save the fancy gowns for the ball)!
What should I bring in my picnic lunch?
Popular Regency picnic items might have consisted of savory finger sandwiches, charcuterie style meats and cheeses, small hand pies, sausage rolls and quiches, small cakes and other sweets, pickles, fresh fruits and lemonade or tea to drink. Don’t forget your picnic aesthetic! Pretty sheets or blankets, pillows to lounge on and a picnic basket tie it all together. We have seen some gorgeous picnic set-ups, however a simple blanket and basket are also perfect.
What is included in afternoon tea?
Afternoon tea will consist of an assortment of finger sandwiches, scones and clotted cream, an assortment of sweet treats such as tarts, fruits and herbal tea.
Should I get a hotel room if I live in St. George?
It’s up to you, however we noticed it’s easier if you’re in town to get ready for the events and have a place to go in between. However, plenty of guests have made it work and drive home at night. We also have some ideas for photo spots and things to do in Cedar during down times on our Instagram page if you are interested.
